The Playhouse on the Square was previously housed in a renovated cinema. Playhouse purchased a lot across the street that included an existing five-story office tower. Morris Architects Planners used the open site area for a new construction theater and designed the backstage support spaces, along with a cafe, administrative space and two floors of rental offices, into the existing five-story building.
The new facility contains a 350-seat proscenium theater, art galleries, rehearsal room, scene shop, and an extensive lobby space and roof deck for public gatherings. The theater is available to arts groups such as Ballet Memphis, the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Opera Memphis, and Concerts International to use for their intimate chamber performances.
